Taming the Beast

No, not that one, this is the single wing variety, but a Beast it is!

The original airframe was mostly build from No-Wood and held together(-not) with No-Glue. Both resulted in a slightly wobbly appearance of the big fan on the front, when it decided to spring into action.

So, drastic action was called for, and no better place to sort this out than the hangar in the Kilbroney Valley.

More when time permits..

Tigers over Tyrella..

Could be the title of a new book, but it’s simpler: It’s only Gerry and Collin having some fun.

Owen is the creator of this nice video!

Marc just sent me a few photos from that brill weekend..

Newcastle 2010

Article shamelessly borrowed from UMAC.

Harry Ferguson himself would have been chuffed with the turn out that attended Newcastle on the 7th and 8th of August, with crowds of around 100,000 filling the streets to see the Red Arrows exhilarating display.

We had been in talks with Newcastle council from last year as to the events that were happening that weekend and if the weather held up we knew that we were in for a treat not just from the Red Arrows but from all the events including Heli flights around the Mournes`.

Air Cadets from Ballynahinch were bringing along a Hunter aircraft cockpit. A fly past from a CASA from the Irish air force were also scheduled along with many other displays (Not forgetting the static display from UMAC).

As the date approached we had arranged to meet up outside the Civic centre around 9.30am to allow plenty of time to set up the marquee and get the models assembled. There was a large selection of models on display to include large scale models, world war 2 models, large turbine jets, night flying Zaggies and not forgetting , Helicopters. Owen Hillis brought his beautiful Vario Bell 212 and for me the show stopper had to be Davy Murchies Vairo Lama with a 120 Jakadofsky turbine (this has to be one of the largest if not the largest turbine heli in the North).

It wasn’t long until people started to gather around the marquee to have a look at the models and engines put out on display and most of the afternoon there was a line of at least three people deep looking and asking questions which keep us busy until the Red Arrows started doing their thing. Sunday started off much the same as Saturday and we decided not to put the marquee up, this made things a lot more open for the public to view the models and seem to make things more relaxed giving us more time to chat, I had spoken to modellers from Holland, England and the USA who were over on holiday .

The whole weekend was fantastic and I was amazed at the amount of people showing interest in taking up this wonderful hobby of ours.

More photo’s can be found on the pic’s page..

enjoy!

Hope to see you all over the weekend!

Ian's got his A..

It’s been coming a long time, but Sunday it finally happened. I think Ian made history by getting himself the First A-certificate in Tyrella.  (correct me if I am wrong!) but if not the first, it was certainly the first in 2010.

However, rumours have it the A-Cert was done under more difficult conditions than usual, and not in front of the clubhut, so does it really count??

Never mind, a big congratulations to Ian, and I’m sure he’ll be on his way soon for the ‘B’.

Yep, we can see the 'A' clearly!

Did we miss someone???

Snow in Tyrella??

Early spring and we have snow!  Not to be detered, a solution is quickly found: put some bottles on the wheels, and you have instant ski’s. By the looks of it, both Colin and Dessie were the brave lads today.

..bottle ski's, who cares?..

..yes, that's Tyrella!

Dessie's new toy??

..Cub with ski's..

Pitts special, that for sure!!

Below a few pics of Dessies Pitts.

It’s been flying a lot recently, hence the ‘tapes’ to keep all the vital bits together. Somewhere it reminds me of the story you hear telling about the old B-52′s: ‘A collection of loose spareparts, generally moving in the same direction.’

..ready??

Never mind, it flies, it’s just thirsty, drinking approx 70cc/min, and if you run out of fuel you have to get home without the fan keeping you cool..

...fuel selectors, what???

just cleared the wires..Ian took all these pics, it's nice to be able to use a good camera! Thks Ian...and down safely..

.. yes, horses do leave piles of the stuff on the field...
